Perry Chen reviewed Alvin & the Chipmunks – the Sequeakquel on Fox 5 San Diego for the Christmas holiday.
3.5 starfish, fun and entertaining for the family, but not a masterpiece ; ). Watch my review:

The story is about 3 chipmunks, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, who are a “rockstar” singing trio from the first film. Alvin is the selfish troublemaker, Simon the responsible nerdy one, and Theodore, the chubby, insecure and innocent one. When they went to a high school for the first time, they met another chipmunk trio called “chipettes”: Britney, Jeanette, and Eleanor, who started later in singing but soon became bigger hits than the male chipmunks themselves. Ian, the scheming, evil former manager became the new chipettes’ agent. In the end, the chipmunks and chipettes joined forces to destroy Ian’s scheme and won victory.
I like the singing, both by the chipettes and the chipmunks. They sound funny and squeaky, like people who inhaled helium. I suppose that’s why it’s called the squeaquel. I noticed that the two trios are mirror image of each other: one is medium, one has glasses, and one is chubby in each trio. It’s interesting each one is attracted to his or her mirror image.
I also like the combination of live action and animation which look seamless.
A major flow is in the finale, the chipmunks and chipettes were singing together flawlessly, but in fact, they have never ever rehearsed together. I find it hard to believe, even for rock stars! There is some crude humor in the film. The storyline is a bit too predictable, and the ending is too neat and tidy. But I think the little kids will love it for the singing and the fun.
I gave it 3.5 starfish. It’s a fun entertaining movie for the family, but not a masterpiece.
