On Feb 26, 2012, award-winning child film critic & animator Perry Chen attended the official Oscar Night America – San Diego red carpet event with his mom and producer Dr. Zhu Shen.  The charity event was hosted by San Diego’s non-profit organization Community Campership Council with the goal of raising funds to support under-privileged kids to go to summer camp.  Perry and Zhu were also VIP guests at the same event in 2011, where Perry predicted Oscar winners.

Perry was introduced on stage by event co-hosts, ABC 10News anchor Virginia Cha and Tom Madeyski.  He predicted the 2012 Oscar winners:

“Rango” will win the best animation feature

“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” will take hom the Oscar for best animated short

“Raju” will win the best live action short

“The Artist” will win best picture

Perry correctely predicted 3 out of 4 Oscar winners. The best live action short winner went to “The Shore” instead.  Perry was most excited about “Morris Lessmore” winning best animated short, he met and interviewed the directors on Feb 24 at the ShortsHD’s Short Film Awards in Hollywood, and admired each other’s drawings:

After “Rango” won best animation feature Oscar, Perry offered for live auction a collectable Rango bag, a Rango DVD, a 20-year anniversary book of Animation Magazine. And during the auction, Perry offered in addition, an autographed copy of his own animation film DVD of “Ingrid Pitt: Beyond the Forest” and a Thank-You card he designed and signed.  The winning bid $150 came from ABC 10News anchor and event co-host Virginia Cha’s husband!  The proceeds will be enough to send 3 kids to camp!

Perry and Zhu enjoyed the festivities, dinner, catching up with Community Campership Council executive director Susan Thorning & other organizers, while watching the Oscar broadcast live on a big screen.  After the event was over, Perry was thrilled to sit on the driver’s seat of the beautiful antique car.  Photographer Brian Bostrom shot many “Perrific!” photos at the event.  A big Thank-You to Brian!  Event photographer Launey LeSage provided official photos for event attendees.
