Of the nine Chinese children’s films shown at the festival, five won awards in acting, mixed media, animation, etc., including:

“The Rain in the Spring”

“Nima’s Summer”

“New Year is Really Nice”

“A Village So Far Away”

“HaoHao Makes Havoc in Wordless City”

Perry’s personal favorites are “The Rain in the Spring” and “Nima’s Summer.” He met and spoke to director/producer of both films at the festival, and talked about why he liked these films at the awards ceremony. “The language of cinema is universal. No matter where the film is from, it has the power to move you and make you think. These Chinese films are case in point,” remarked Perry.

After introducing himself as a child film critic and animator, Perry said, “I also write for the San Diego Entertainer Magazine. Given the recession and many journalists losing their jobs, I am making a decent profit as a paid columnist.” This remark drew the loudest cheer and laughter from the audience at the event.

“The Rain in the Spring showed that a great teacher can nourish his students just like the spring rain nourishes the crops. Nima’s Summer shows us that friendship can overcome animosity. Both films have superb acting, rich storyline and characters, and powerful moral. I hope more American families can enjoy wonderful Chinese films like these, and more Chinese audience can experience the thrill of American movies.”

Following the successful first visit from the Chinese children’s film delegation in 2009 that brought us eleven feature films screened at the San Diego International Children’s Film Festival, nine films will be showcased this year on August 27-29. There are two location for this year’s festival.

Aug 27 and 28
Balboa Park’s Hall of Nation (west of the Organ Pavilion). 1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101

Aug 29
AMN Healthcare Auditorium. 12400 High Bluff Drive, San Diego, CA 92130

This year’s movies are even better than last year’s. I am honored to be asked as one of the judges and vote for the awards that will be given at the gala on Aug 28.

Several films this year are about a person (a teacher or a child) adapting in an unfamiliar place. My favorite film is “The Rain in the Spring.”

A teacher’s wish is to teach kids who will grow up to be better than the teacher. That is exactly the case for Mr. Zhou, a physics teacher and headmaster in a village in Shandong province who captivated his middle school students with fun experiments. The school had no wall in the back, so animals and thieves could get in. Every night, someone stole his physics “magic box” and hid it behind the school.

……

In China, spring rain is a metaphor, because in the spring, the rain helps grass grow just like a teacher helps kids succeed.

This film is riveting and moved me to tears. I give it 4 starfish. It is about hard work, perseverance, and a teacher’s devotion.

A great teacher can nourish children like a spring rain nourishes crops.

My second favorite is “Nima’s Summer.”

In this awesome live action meets Chinese anime film, Nima, a teenage yak herder from Tibet, finds himself transplanted to a metropolis middle school. Nima develops a passion for soccer and sees everyone as his friend. The problem is that he doesn’t realize that the schoolyard bullies, Feiyang and his sidekick, do not see him as a friend. In the end, Nema overcomes many obstacles and winning the hearts of his teachers and fellow students (including his foes).

I give the film 4 starfish. It is “Perrific,” with an interesting storyline and tidbits of hilarious animation woven into it. I also wish there were more live action scenes of Tibet and Nema herding Yaks. It would show more contrast with Nima’s city life.

I hope many families and lovers of film and Chinese culture will come and enjoy the festivities this year on Aug 27-29.

A filmmaker panel discussion on Aug 27 at 3 pm about how US filmmakers can get their films co-produced and distributed in China will be held at Balboa Park’s Hall of Nations (same venue as film screening). All San Diego filmmakers are welcome to attend. All film screenings and panel discussion are free and open to public. Enjoy!

Young Hearts Versus the Undead
A postcard from Comic-Con

Those who founded it can barely recognize it now, if at all. What had begun in August of 1970 as a small but passionate enterprise with 200 people in attendance has mushroomed across four decades into a phenomenon that attracts upwards of 125,000 people annually, among them the film industry’s most famous and powerful. In an era whose aesthetics and revenues are driven by comic-book fantasies, Comic-Con has become the nuclear engine of the industry.

The San Diego Convention Center is a massive fleet of conjoined meeting rooms and exhibition halls that looks as if it could contain an aircraft carrier. Inside, the 125,000 people may as well be twice as many, psychologically multiplying as you herd among them to tour massive displays put up by companies that produce and promote True Blood, Twilight, and games, gothic apocalypse fantasies (lots of those), monsters you’ve never heard of but will in a year. All roar from loudspeakers like carnival barkers while costumed assistants disgorge brilliant swag (comics, cards, posters, figurines) into the avid mitts and shoulder-to-toe backpacks most passersby are toting: Trick or treat!

……

The most coveted of the grand showcases (Green Lantern, Matt Groening) proved nearly impossible to get into, unless you were willing to loiter on line for three hours ahead of time. Press-passes worked no magic in such circumstances. Mind you, this is an observation, not a complaint: Comic-Con exists for fans, not reporters. A pro can always wait a year for the Green Lantern. Nor is Matt Groening entirely remote to any scribe who lives in Los Angeles. At the WGAW AWC-hosted animation writers panel in one of the meeting rooms upstairs, the best question of the hour was asked by a ten-year-old film critic and budding animator with his own website, on assignment for San Diego Entertainment magazine: Perry S. Chen.

Perry Chen asking co-director /co-writer Dean DeBlois of "How to Train Your Dragon" at Comic-Con animation writers panel

Perry Chen asking question to director Dean DeBlois at Comic-Con writers panel

“I notice that many DreamWorks animation films such as Shrek have crude humor like farting,” he asked Dean DeBlois, co-writer and co-director of How to Train Your Dragon: “Your DreamWorks film does not. Why is that and what’s your view on crude humor in animation?”

Asked with a child’s directness, this was nevertheless the question of one interested in making films. DeBlois, charmed, answered: “No disrespect to my friends who made Shrek,” but then was moved to talk more deeply and specifically than usual about the ins- and-outs of how he and his writing partners, William Davies and Chris Sanders, make a place for something uniquely character-driven in a market where crudity has become the norm.

Perry Chen with Director Dean DeBlois post Comic-Con panel Q&A (photo by Zhu Shen)

Young Mr. Chen’s enterprising energy and curious nature struck this reporter as an example of the saving grace of Comic-Con. Even when bombardments to the senses grew overwhelming, even when you might feel you’re in a giant madhouse navigating a sea of lost souls who are all wearing somebody else’s fantasy, every once in awhile you encountered actual individual creativity and felt restored.

……..

In an interview for the current issue of Written By, Bradbury had assured Writers Guild members and subscribers that he would make his way to Comic-Con, which he’s loyally attended from the very first. He was close to its founder Shel Dorf, and was an early and ardent supporter of the Fest, back when it was largely attended by a few dozen teenagers with shared passions for comics, graphic artists, and the fantasies of Bradbury and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Two of these, writers Greg Bear and Dave Clark, were present to hear this year’s talk. Both men’s lives have been deeply marked for the better by their decades of subsequent friendship with Bradbury: Bear is the acclaimed author of over 30 science fiction novels (among them Blood Music, The Forge of God and Darwin’s Radio), several of which have won Hugo and Nebula awards; Clark, whose Comic-Con continuity was interrupted by an early ’70s tour in Vietnam, is a dealer in fine wines who continues to write poetry, draw and make fine art in his spare time. Apart from being wryly amused at what their old club had become, they fondly remembered a moment that dramatically illustrates the committed openness, spontaneity, and authenticity that Bradbury was impressing upon his listeners.

According to Bear, long before Comic-Con was a twinkle in anyone’s eyes, “We wrote Ray a fan letter, and to our amazement he not only wrote back but said if we ever found ourselves in Los Angeles, he would take us to lunch.”

The two aspirants immediately made an appointment and boarded a bus as soon as they could. In those days, Bradbury wrote in a private office on Wilshire Boulevard; after giving his guests the cook’s tour, he took them to a fancy restaurant. “We ordered hamburgers,” Bear recalls, softly shaking his head. “But Ray’s response was kind. He said to us: ‘You may be missing an opportunity here, gentlemen,’ and proceeded to tell us a funny little story about a similar faux pas he’d made on his first trip to Europe. At the end of it, we ordered something else.”

Both have since become avid gourmets, and Clark runs a winery, but what abides with deepest warmth in their memories is that the Maestro gently coaxed them out of their adolescent hiding places with a smile, and above all, a story.

Onstage at Comic-Con, Bradbury biographer Sam Weller amiably, expertly moderated for the crowd, concisely footnoting details for the assembly as needed, bending to Ray’s good ear and distilling all questions to their essence so as to get the maximum answers. Together they told of how Bradbury, who has never in his life sat behind the wheel of a car, visited JPL in Pasadena in the late 1990s while the interplanetary rover was making its first explorations of the Martian surface. The technicians handed him the robot’s joystick and invited him to steer it. At day’s end they furnished him with a specially engraved, one-of-a-kind Martian Driver’s License, to commemorate the occasion – the only driver’s license he has ever had in his life.

When Weller asked for a special round of applause in honor of Ray’s upcoming 90th birthday on August 22, the crowd went him one better: They stood and sang “Happy Birthday”—quite a powerful, heart-filling chant, even downright Gregorian. Lay congregations in churches seldom if ever sing with such enthusiasm, or heart, or unity. And why is that?

It felt like an illumination of what writing is for.

There were no costumes in the room, interestingly enough. These were readers—and writers, too, one could surmise from some of the questions—who wore their imaginations within. All ages were represented, but even those in middle age had remarkably youthful, unlined faces. Greg Bear, Dave Clark, and the other teenagers of 1970 who founded this convention in Ray’s company are now in their late 50s but bear the same bright stamp in their eyes. So does Perry Chen, at the beginning of his creative life.

Some energy greater than Bradbury himself, a force he has been privileged to channel in his amazingly productive life, had brought these people together in this room and called their voices forth. Call it creation—what else could promote such religious feeling, or tantalize the world of strangers outside the room to dress up like superheroes? For all the hype surrounding Comic-Con, this was the essence of the experience, and Bradbury was rightly enthroned at the very hub of it.

“Great artists,” wrote Pascal, “Do not show us their own riches. They show us ours.”

Perry Chen’s speaker profile:

When most people think “film critic,” they probably think of Roger Ebert and star ratings, Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic. Movie reviewer Perry Chen is giving them something new to think about. With a creative ”starfish” rating system and insights on movies’ believability and moral, this ten-year-old entertainment personality is attracting a wide following on his website, radio show, and frequent newspaper columns. Currently, Perry is animating an educational short film about a young Jewish girl’s survival during the Holocaust, “Beyond the Forest,” in partnership with Oscar-nominee Bill Plympton.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

TEDx, x=independently organize event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Follow TED on Twitter at twitter.com/TEDTalks, or on Facebook at facebook.com/TED. TEDGlobal 2010, “And Now the Good News,” will be held July 13–16, 2010, in Oxford, UK.
