At age nine, Chen became a national sensation with his network TV debut on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric for being the youngest film critic in the country in 2009. He had since reviewed movies and entertainment for The San Diego Union Tribune, Animation World Network, Amazing Kids! Magazine, DiningOut San Diego Magazine, San Diego Entertainer, We Chinese in America newspaper and magazine, in addition to his own PerrysPreviews blog.

At age ten, Chen animated his first short film “Ingrid Pitt: Beyond the Forest” about a young Jewish girl’s survival during the Holocaust, in collaboration with two-time Oscar nominee, animation legend Bill Plympton. The film became an instant hit with audience, filmmakers, and critics alike, playing at over 30 film festivals around the world, winning three film festival awards in the U.S. In 2011, Chen was the youngest animator whose short became an Oscar-qualifying film. The film was made with generous support and sponsorship from Toom Boom Animation and Wacom, distributed by Shorts International.  Perry was also a winner of the 2nd Screen Global Con “Junior Innovator of the Year Award” in August 2013, and featured in a parenting book “Raising CEO Kids”.

Chen has finished two more animation shorts in collaboration with others, and is working on his 4th and most personal animation film “Changyou’s Journey” about his late father Dr. Changyou Chen, a biotech CEO who passed away from cancer in 2012. Chen is the writer, animator, and director, his mother Dr. Zhu Shen is the producer. Watch trailer and donate:
